With the use of ethanol and biodiesel on the rise, it is imperative retailers and marketers take basic preparatory steps to ensure a smooth transition to these fuels.  All water and sludge needs to be removed from the storage tanks before the first delivery of these fuels to prevent phase separation and microbial growth.  In a 10% ethanol blend, it takes as little as 18 gallons of water in a 6000 gallon tank to cause phase separation! These new fuels also act as a cleaning agent, scouring contaminants from the sidewalls and the bottom of the storage tanks.  A routine operations and maintenance program needs to be implemented.
